1. Open new composition and make the dimensions of the project 1920 X 1080 and name the project "YourNameWriting" and change the time to 4 seconds.
2. press "ctrl+Y" to create a new solid layer, color doesn't matter.

3. Make sure that your new solid layer is selected in the timeline and use the mask tool ("Q") to create an ellipse on the screen.  Hold shift while dragging out the circle to create perfect proportion and center the circle when finished by clicking in the center of the circle with the selection tool ("V") and pressing "ctrl+home" like the image above.

4. Next add the STROKE effect which is located in effects if you type "stroke". Drag this onto the shape layer like the image above.

5. Change the paint style of the Stroke oprions to "On Transparent" like the image above. (also in the image above is the brush size, mine is set at 2.0 but you need to change this to 10)

6.  press this button so you are able to watch the transformation of the mask.

7. With the scrubber all the way to the left on the timeline click the START option's stop watch to insert a key frame like the image above.

8. Drag the scrubber to 4 seconds and change the "start" percentage from 0 to 100%. Drag the scrubber left to right to see what effect this has on the mask stroke.

9. Left click on the second key frame that you have created  to highlight it and then press F9 to add what is known as an Easy Ease. What this does is slow down the animation at the beginning. So rather than have one steady speed of the mask animation, the second key frame will be "eased" into.

10. With the solid layer still selected in the timeline, use the ellipse tool again to create another circle, while holding shift, onto the stage and arrange the masks like mine. Also check the box "All Masks" to apply the stroke effect to both masks, like the image above.

11. Notice that the masks animate sequentially. To change this so that they both animate simultaneously, check the box "Stroke Sequentially" which is located directly below the "All Masks" button.

12. Choose one of the masks and rotate it so that the start points of the animated stroke no longer are in the same place. Also add another mask into the stage but make this one a rectangle like the image above.

13. Click on the eye of the solid layer in the timeline to turn off the layer.

14. Next import the picture of Miles Davis that is above this sentence. Drag the image down to the timeline and scale it to fit the comp like I have done in the image above.

15. Drag the image down to the timeline and scale it to fit the comp like I have done in the image above.

16. Go to the top of the page and click the Layer tab, at the bottom of the drop down menu click on auto-trace.

17. Make your auto-trace options match mine and press enter like the image above.

18. Import the autograph image above.

19. Position and scale both the image of the face and the autograph to look like mine in the image above.

20. Put the same stroke effect on Miles Davis face layer that we put on the shapes in the beginning. Change the paint style option from Original Image to "on transparent" and check the box All masks again.

21. Do the same exact thing to the autograph layer.

22. Animate the start of the stroke effect on both the face and the autograph from 0 seconds to 4 seconds just like the shape layers that we did in the beginning.

23. Your project is to find a face, either yours or someone else's off of the internet and make an autograph and animate the stroke the same way we just did to Miles Davis.

24. Find an image of a face to use. Change the image to black and white. Change the levels of the image so that there is more black and white than grey. If you have questions with this I will address you individually. Use the stylus pen and pad to "sign" an autograph" onto the canvas and save this as a .png. Name the new composition "FaceYourName" and make the duration 10 seconds. Make your animation last 10 seconds. Lastly, incorporate shape masks into the animation as well like we did in the beginning of the tutorial. Smile, have fun and hate not having fun.
